Raising Voices, Lifting Each Other: An Unforgettable International Women’s Day Event
This year, for International Women’s Day (IWD), I wanted to do something special, something that would bring women together, celebrate their achievements, and amplify their voices. I thought long and hard about the kind of event that would truly embody the spirit of IWD. My heart kept telling me to focus on women-led activities, women-owned businesses, and women-driven sports. After all, IWD is about more than just recognition; it’s about advocacy, equality, and the unstoppable progression of women across the globe.
I was incredibly fortunate to connect with community groups that were just as excited as I was. With the support of my amazing volunteers and colleagues, we shaped an event that would be vibrant, empowering, and full of inspiration. What started as an idea soon turned into a powerful movement, with passionate individuals eager to contribute.
The response was overwhelming! The Warwickshire Cricket Club, a talented local artist, a creative crafters’ group, a beloved local bakery, three dynamic new entrepreneurs, and an electrifying African drumming group – all women-led, became integral to making this event truly special. Each of them brought their unique energy, skills, and passion, shaping an event that celebrated women in all their incredible diversity and strength.
When March 8th arrived, the universe seemed to be cheering us on! The sun was shining, the temperature climbed to a glorious (for the UK!) 17 degrees, and the atmosphere was buzzing with excitement. As people filled the space, there was an undeniable sense of unity, positivity, and empowerment. Women supporting women. Communities lifting each other up.
The day was packed with energy! Music filled the air, feet moved to the rhythm of dance and laughter echoed through the crowd. Activities included painting, sports, heartfelt conversations, and, most importantly, a shared commitment to the mission of Birmingham and Solihull Women’s Aid (BSWA): working towards a future where no woman or child has to face violence and abuse.
Seeing so many people come together, fuelled by passion and purpose, was nothing short of inspiring. It reminded me why events like this matter, they create awareness, spark action, and build a community of support that extends far beyond a single day.
But this is just the beginning. If this event showed me anything, it’s that when we come together, we are unstoppable. There are so many ways to get involved with BSWA – whether it’s volunteering, attending future events, donating, or simply spreading the word. Change happens when we take action, and every small effort counts.
If you want to be part of this movement and help create a safer, more empowering world for women, join us. Reach out, show up, and let’s continue building a future where every woman and child can thrive, free from violence and fear.
Let’s keep the momentum going—because together, we are powerful!
